Silk is one of the greatest inventions of the Chinese people. When exactly did silk textiles first emerge in China? What were the practical uses of the earliest silk artifacts? Why was the ancient trade route between the East and the West named the “Silk Road”? What unique characteristics does silk possess? And what are the differences between Ling (damask), Luo (gauze), Chou (plain silk), Duan (satin), Jin (brocade), and Kesi (tapestry silk)?
